Refurbished tech: who AI assistants actually recommend (July 2026)

Every month, Citatur asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini the same buyer-intent questions — "where should I buy a refurbished iPhone?", "is refurbished worth it?", "best refurbished laptop site?" — and measures which brands the answers actually recommend.

This is the July 2026 snapshot for refurbished electronics: 18 questions, 4 platforms, 72 answers, 10 brands tracked.

The July 2026 ranking

# VisibilityShare of voice
1Back Market backmarket.com90/10028%
2Amazon Renewed amazon.com65/10020%
3Swappa swappa.com43/10013%
4eBay Refurbished ebay.com39/10012%
5Gazelle gazelle.com35/10011%

Visibility score blends mention rate, position and recommendation strength across the four platforms. Top 5 of 10 tracked brands shown — the full ranking lives on the leaderboard.

One brand owns the conversation

Back Market is in a league of its own. It appears in 90% of all answers, holds 28% of every brand mention in the category, and is the only brand above 65/100. On Perplexity it scores a perfect 100 — every single relevant answer recommends it.

The surprise is how uneven the runners-up are. Amazon Renewed looks strong at 65/100 — but that average hides a split personality: 94 on ChatGPT versus 33 on Claude. Ask ChatGPT where to buy refurbished and Amazon is everywhere; ask Claude the same question and it barely comes up. Your AI visibility is not one number — it is four different editorial stances.

And Europe? Refurbed, one of the continent's biggest refurbished marketplaces, scores under 10/100. The remaining five tracked brands — including well-funded European players — all sit below 20. The AI answer layer is, today, an American-sounding shelf.

Reddit is the second-biggest source

The most cited domain is Back Market's own site — the leader gets to be its own reference. But the second most cited source in the whole category is reddit.com (26 citations), ahead of Best Buy and Apple.

AI assistants lean heavily on community consensus: threads where real users compare Swappa, Gazelle and Back Market are quoted as evidence. A comparison site most marketers have never heard of, refurb.me, is cited 20 times — more than Apple. If you sell refurbished tech and nobody talks about you on Reddit or the comparison sites AIs trust, you effectively do not exist in the answer.

Three takeaways for brands

  1. Measure per platform, not on average. Amazon Renewed's 94-vs-33 split shows a single blended number can hide a dead channel.
  2. Work the sources, not just your site. Reddit threads and niche comparison sites (refurb.me, reebelo.com) carry the answers. Being referenced there moves your visibility faster than another landing page.
  3. Category leaders compound. Back Market's dominance means every undecided buyer who asks an AI gets nudged its way — 90% of the time. The gap between #1 and #3 is not 2× — it is the difference between default choice and footnote.
